In 2009 I discovered that foods containing gluten were the cause of chronic stomach aches and bloating. After a friend suggested I was showing symptoms of having a gluten allergy I went to a holistic doctor who suggested an elimination diet to make a determination. The results confirmed that foods containing wheat were a cause, if not THE cause of my pain. I have since not followed up to confirm whether I am intolerant or have Celiac Disease (there’s a difference) but intend to at some point. The end result will be the same – eliminate gluten from my diet, there is no cure, and why I’m not in a rush. A gluten free diet is tough to follow and I do not understand why anyone would choose to do it as a ‘fad’ although I hear this term thrown around often. To be honest it’s a little bit offensive to hear people respond “it’s a fad, are you doing it because you have to?” because it’s more like an eating handicap. Celiac Disease is the most common autoimmune disorder, according to the National Institutes of Health — affecting 2.5 million to 3 million Americans. For each person diagnosed with celiac disease, an estimated 60 to 70 people go undiagnosed. Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitive (NCGS) may be as many as ~15% of all people or 1 in 7. (source) I can’t blame people for making such comments, I live in San Diego where eating habits do center around the latest fad diet. I blame L.A.

One thing I have learned is that it isn’t uncommon. The more I talk about it, the more people I find all around me who are gluten free too (not for fad). So, I began collecting the things I learn and the challenges we face day-to-day in the Life Gluten Free blog to share with them.

Thanks for the info Melonie! I’m also living GF and constantly finding that gluten is hidden in many products. Often times, the only way I discover it is from the intestinal issues that rear their ugly head shortly after consumption. Thanks for spreading the word about this issue and giving a peak into the GF life (which, really, isn’t so bad).

What a perfect way to describe it “rear their ugly head”. That’s exactly what I experience. All the time! I’m still figuring out how to navigate this diet in the outside world. At home it’s easy.

I’ve been gluten free for 8 years and I had to deal with a lot of misunderstandings and people thinking it was just the “latest thing” I was trying. Going gluten free is tough at first but eventually, it will become second nature to you. Let me know if you have questions.
